"As far as amps go, yeah, I really prefer the '79s."
I noticed this and thought, hey check out the schematic. So I did. The thing I noticed first was that the amp has a diode rectifier instead of the traditional tube rectification most of this family of amps would have. Does this have anything to do with why you prefer the 79 Marshall to say another period of amps? Does it affect your tone?

I have bought all my heads from the same shop in Chicago. Midwest Buy and Sell. Very cool place to get gear. They always have a dozen or so heads and I would play them all and just pick the one I liked best. I bought four heads over the course of 18 months. When I got them serviced, the amp tech said, "boy, you sure like those '79 heads." I had no idea that they were all from the same year. When we played in LA, one of the amp gurus came out to our show and asked me if my JMP was a 79. I replied that it was. He commented that they were the ones to have. I have never done any more research into why I like them or what the variable might be. Maybe I should. lol. Thanks for bringing your expertise to the GEAR SHACK! Now you got me curious...

Alright, I got the skinny. Spongy is the word! You see the voltage drops as the current increases in a tube rectifier. VOLUME, yeah baby! Good article here. www.soldano.com/amp-help/tube-vs-solid-state-rectifiers/KeithAmps.com coming soon! (lost my login info so ... aka keithgeiser)

This is an old thread....but just curious. Most of the old Marshalls got that great tone by overdriving the power tubes vs. the newer ones which get most tine from the preamp tubes. I know earlier you said your cabs wereoaded with Greencacks.........what levels do you play the preamp and Master Volume at? Thanks Anthony. Looking forward to sseing you at Aces in Bradenton next month.
