Hello to all the Friends and Family,
The Freedom Run made a pit stop in St. Louis to pick up Pinky and Melva for the last two shows of the Freedom Run. We had a thirteen hour drive with only four hours of sleep. We were a little road weary but our spirits were high. It was a beautiful summer day.
We arrived to the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival Host hotel in Bettendorf, IA called the Lodge. It was like stepping back into time with Renaissance period furnishings throughout the hotel and rooms. Picture the Holiday Inn meets Medieval Times, sort of like we were in a German castle. We were provided with a little rest time and a wonderful meal and then it was off to the festival.
The festival was located in downtown Davenport, IA. Usually it’s held by the river but it had to be moved at the last minute because of recent flooding. The promoters literally had a week to change logistics and they did an excellent job! We arrived to a large stage and a packed audience. Samantha Fish and her band were rocking the house. The weather provided a perfect evening for a summertime festival.
The band hit the stage at 9 pm with “Back To The Start” to a crowd of 3,000 blues maniacs. Due to the excellent sound and PA system it was very powerful. It hit you in the face without bruising you. Circles/Testify is fast becoming a crowd favorite. Pinky nearly shattered all the glass buildings with her high notes in “Wade In The Water”. Once again, “Voodoo Moon” was so moving giving its setting near the Mississippi River. The merchandise table was definitely busy well into the next band’s set with many new converts. The new T-Shirts ARE A BIG HIT!!! A lot of people bought multiple CDs.
The set was over but the show wasn’t. We returned to the late night jam at the host hotel in the lower dungeon. After all those hours of driving and performing, the work was over for Lo and I… but not for the band. Anthony and the band got up to jam and did their thing. We needed to rest, but we were having such a great time. Lothar lost his all area access backstage pass and had to be rescued because they wouldn’t let him in.
What a pleasure to be a part of a long standing festival. They know how to do it right and make it a successful event. They paid attention to all the little details and it was much appreciated.
Everyone made us feel so welcomed and at home. It was great to see our brother Spike in the house. Kenny was making sure our stage was rocking! Kenny, we can’t wait to get back to Racals! Philip Koehlhoeffer arranged a very cool hospitality suite for the artists. A big thank you to all the volunteers!!!! This was one of the highlights of the year for us!
