Greetings from the Road,
Here we are on Day 3 of the FREEDOM TOUR and it's only fitting that our travels to Deb's Blues Farm should take us through the Heartland of American on the Fourth of July Weekend. With the exception of 15 interstate miles our trip took us through farming communities on two lane roads through Illinois and Missouri as we followed the Mississippi River. Something we've been doing the whole weekend. Let me tell you these roads were winding. Thank God Lothar wasn't with us because the windy roads would have been whiny. To quote Tilt-A-Whirl "You Got My Head Spinning Left, My Head Spinning Right"...
Before we knew it we arrived to Deb's Blues Farm. A beautiful Blues Oasis in the woods. Her home is a beautiful Blues and Music Museum and a testament to her commitment to music. A huge open air covered stage and seating area was set up for the bands and fans. Let me tell you this was cool. It could rival many of the smaller Festivals we've played. There was a bountiful buffet of food and adult beverages. Again, thank God Lo wasn't here. It could have been hazardous to his health.
The weather was perfect and the crowd was filled with people that were there to hear the music. Then the band took the stage. Once again, not to be repetitive, but 'Voodoo Moon' was one of the highlights of the night. Although it was an outdoor event, there was an intimacy that created a wonderful loose vibe. The band seemed to push the music in different directions.
The highlight of the evening was the aftershow jam. St. Louis guitar slinger Tony Campanella got up to jam with the boys and tonight the fireworks were on the stage. Except for the ones that Steve Conn brought for special effect. AG and Tony pushed each other and they were having a blast. It was like a hockey game with the puck going back and forth. It was cool!
We had a guest appearance from Tommy The Toad. A frog made it's way on the stage and was hopping around to the beat of the music.
Rip Kastaris, a fantastic artist, presented Deb with an original framed illustration of AG. Now he is in the Blues Farm Hall of Fame. Tim Brewer was there 'til the very end despite having to be at Busch stadium at 9 am the next morning. Next time Tim, when AG asks you to play the guitar, take advantage of it! Dirty Hippie was there ripping it up. Rick, the high priest of Rock N Roll was also present and seated in the front row!!! Madison Thorn, another member of the family getting her groove on. It was at least year's Blues Farm that she first heard AG. Anita and Carl Eckhardt came all the way from Texas. Thanks guys! It was so nice to see the Blues Farm Family - Susie Q, ShitSue and Randy, Renee and her husband, Birdie (Roberta) and Tammy. Yeah, yeah, yeah!
I would like to acknowledge all of the fine artists on the bill - Preston Hubbard, The Mighty Orq, Headley Grange and Tony Camponella and his band - for providing a wonderful day of music.
As time drew to a close, a huge fire was lit. Everyone gathered to celebrate a great Fourth of July Weekend.
The GPS took us back a different path. The ten minute drive took us back to our hotel half an hour later. Oh Lo is Me!
See You Down the Road, Where I Hope You Find Your Freedom Too...
