I hate seeing musicians having to pass a bucket to try to make a buck! Guitar Player Magazine had an article a couple of months back on how it's getting harder for bar bands to make money. Some clubs now require bands to gurantee a certain draw at the door, or they don't get paid. Other places are asking the band to pay to play there, and then they keep the cover charges from the door. Just wait till the same band starts drawing large crowds whenever they play, and they'll change that! It seems to make any kind of money you should stick to the power trio format. If you have a lead singer, lead, rhythm, and bass guitars, keys and drums you're sunk!
