Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!
Greetings to all our AG fans. It's great to be back in the pilots seat of the "Silver Bullit" bringing Anthony's music and message to the people.
Since we had an early show time (5:30) and a 9 hour drive with a time change on top of it, we left St. Louis not "bright and early" but "dark and way too early" Saturday morning. Needless to say the first half of the trip was pretty quiet in the van. Thankfully we had great weather and "smooth sailing " and managed to arrive in Hillsdale with time to check into the motel and freshin ' up for the show.
And what a show. John of Checker Records provided a beautiful rain free evening this year. Lothar has given you a "right on" description of the music that evening but I would like to add a few things.
This was my first show with Theo on board and was anxious to hear and.see him play. Now Anthony has had some really talented Sidemen in his travels as many of us know, but this dude is in a place of his own. Great player, spirit, soul, attitude. Welcome aboard Theo! Can't wait to see where you guys take this. (Special note: "guys" is a generic term referring to the "band" regardless of gender--Love ya Girls.)
Walter Trout's jam with Anthony was a definite highlight of the evening, as reported earlier. What was omitted from that report was the fact that there was a third participant in that jam, world famous blues harp player Harper. He had a night off and made a detour to get up to make sure he caught the show, as they are all good friends.
After Walter's set and the van was packed, the after party came together. It started just a few blocks away in two different establishments downtown. The band was joined by earlier mentioned family members as well as Harper and his lovely wife Bobbi and Michael, Walter's drummer. From there it moved back to the motel , which turned out to be a perfect setting to end the evening. The entire back courtyard was pretty much Anthony Gomes people and the weather was gorgeous and spirits soaring from some great music and friendship. For once I wasn't the "last man standing". We had another early departure.
Special thanks to Mike the photographer and his wife Angela. They took care merch. for me on my frequent vacancies from the booth during the show. You see, the merch booth was around the corner in a courtyard along the side of Checker Records with no view of the stage Need I say more.
We started Sunday not quite as early as the day before, but 9am found us heading towards the north of Chicago to the beautiful Chain of Lakes area. We stopped at one of our preferred lunch spots, the Panda Express and made it to our hotel with about 15 mins to get ready for the early show (3:30). The hotel was 30 minutes from the venue with multiple lefts and rights around the several lakes in the area. Both of our smart phone GPS systems were freaking out. Thanks
for the steady navigation Anthony!
Once again Lo is "spot on" with his description of what the show was like with both musicians and family and fans. Here are some of my random observations: Room 414 was especially ripping but Anthonys ' invitation to everyone to the afterparty to the wrong room at the right hotel left me a little apprehensive. Voodoo Moon--outstanding. This is fast becoming a crowd favorite. Roger turned his drum kit into a set of bongos and congas for his solo. Anthony seems to have a lot of freedom with this song and its always fun. Fly Away was "soaring" and vocally rich. Theos' solo as a lead into this song was strong. Tilt-a-whirl yeayeayea. Always a crowd pleaser that gets everyone up. Thanks for keeping it in the lineup boss. And lastly but most importantly, TESTIFY. Hell yea! What a rocker. Never fails to get it happening. As Lo reported, Anthony was in command of a Rockstar moment. With only microphone in hand he commands the stage, and properly so.
What a great show on a beautiful afternoon See you next year Tim.
We headed our winding way back to hotel. We were all invited back to Tim's house for the afterparty. Thanks to Anthony, Roger and Theo for representing us properly. I made the mistake of laying down on that comfortable pillow top mattress in a well appointed hotel room and knew I wasn't going anywhere. Besides, we still had an LP Management board meeting to conduct.
I have to say this was a memorable run. The entire band was on top of their game and the fans showed their support. All I have left to say is "get to a show" and wear your t-shirt. (If you don't have the latest version you better get on line and order it cause we are running out).
Well now! A short skip from Michigan to beautiful Land of Lakes, Antioch, IL. and the benefit show for 'Children of Fallen Riders' . Tim Atkins Had it going on right! My man Nick guiding us through the throng of people & bikes to the stage. A sunny summer day with a nice breeze in a beautiful cove. The 'Kids' cranked out Voodoo Moon just as eerily in the bright sun as a midnight show...ooooo!!! And Darkest Before The Dawn was awesome with the setting sun, in an inverted sort of way. AG had that guitar SQUEALING in One Last Time, and had that Fender Telly speaking Loud & Clear in Circles! Hail Yea! With a short break the Kids came out loose and flowing for the second set. Definitely a unique & special 2nd set. The tunes just flowed with Love Sweet Love and the Girls taking Fly Away & Amazing Grace over the top! This is where Fender Telly did its (her?) speaking in Circles! Anthony invited Tallan, (young man with the 'Touch') and Shawn McKee (also with the 'Touch' ) to jam and deliver the money shot with Testify! Did I say special & unique?! Anthony without a guitar, taking command of the stage with 7 super talented musicians and belting out slammin 'In Your Face' Testify! Ha!!!
At the Merch Booth Tim's Mamma relentlessly administered the CD versions of the medicine! What a doll! Her sincerity and love for the cause and music shone brightly! My 'real' brother Wolfgang & sweet Mary came out to enjoy, and thanks to Bill McKee for letting junior stay out late enough to play for us! And from way back before my beginning, a pleasant surprise to shake hands with Peter Grady of the Oyster Bar! Great seeing Peter and Son! I will check with my 'memory bank' to see if I missed something . Love & loud music!
