Anthony’s music is definitely my medicine and life has been a little stressful lately and I needed more than my normal one show at Chan’s in Woonsocket so I decided to add another show. After work Friday I made the two hour ride down to Manchester, CT to the Hungry Tiger to see him. The venue was nice and intimate and the guys put on one heck of show. It’s been a while since I saw a show in a bar and I have really missed the vibe that atmosphere brings. As usual my favorite part of the night was when he played Fly Away/Bluebird. That song is the first one I ever heard him sing and I was a fan from that moment. This show was my first time seeing the new drummer and he was great. His name is Fred and he is definitely a welcome addition to the band.
The next morning I left my hotel and started the roughly two hour ride through CT and MA to RI on back roads. Upon arriving in Woonsocket I checked in to see what time they were opening the doors at Chan’s and found out the show was SOLD OUT! This was great news for Anthony but not so much for the people like one of my friends who had waited until the last minute to get their tickets. Definitely a lesson learned to make sure to get your tickets early next time! Another lesson was learned that night – don’t play on your phone during an Anthony Gomes show. A poor man at my table was playing on his and Anthony called him out. He was right too many people focus on other things and don’t just listen to the music and experience the live shows. I had forgot to bring my camera on the trip and I was glad I had forgot it because sometimes I get too wrapped up in getting pictures that I miss the message the music is sending. The crowd was great and the guys were on fire. They even played an encore. The passion and energy they play with is incredible. The treat of the evening was getting to hear Darkest before the Dawn with some extra French and listening to a new song Blues Child. It was nice to hear him tell a story from his childhood when he introduced that song. Immediately after the show I decided to start the two hour ride home to NH so I could get some rest in my own bed and head out to Rockland Maine for another show. Most people would say I was crazy enough to attend two shows of the same artist in one weekend but I know if you are reading this you are just as passionate about Anthony’s music as I am and you understand the power it holds and I just had to get one last show before the months of waiting for him to return to New England.
Sunday was supposed to be the better of the weekend days weather wise which would have made for a great ride to the ocean, however, it rained on and off the entire 3hrs plus ride. After having a little trouble with directions I arrived at the venue ~ The Time Out Pub. He has played there many times but I’ve never made the trip up because it’s usually on a Monday night so having a Sunday show was a treat. Not to mention a 6-9pm show didn’t get me home too late since I had work the next morning. The view from the venue was beautiful even with the clouds and the show inside was amazing. It was hard to believe that the same man that had played with so much passion and had seemed to have left everything he had on the stage the previous two nights was the one I was watching. The crowd was on their feet dancing for almost every song and when everyone wasn’t standing he got them up. Someone else posted the set list which I’ve included here. I have to admit that I didn’t focus on that because this weekend was about feeling the music and letting it soothe my soul which it definitely did.
Set List for Rockland (pretty much same for all shows):
Testify ~ Room 414 ~ Blues Child ~ One Last Time ~ Let Me Love You ~ Darkest Before the Dawn ~ Bluesified ~ Back to the Start ~ Love Sweet Love ~ Voodoo Child ~ This Broken Heart of Mine ~ Fly Away ~ Circles
I also had the privilege of meeting Ron from the street team in Maine and he gave me a cd that he had made of the previous show at the Time Out Pub. My 3+ hour drive home was spent having my own private 4th show of the weekend. So thank you so much!
Well I hope this gives you a little snapshot into my weekend. I’m not much of a writer but when asked to write a review I couldn’t say no. If anyone reading this is from NH and willing to work with me on getting Anthony promoted and hopefully booked here please reach out and let me know.
Thank you so much Anthony, Theo, Fred and Lo for making my weekend so special. I can’t wait to see you again and I’m definitely thinking these three show weekends are the way to go in the future.
