Hello to all in Gomes Land!
L3 here along with Lo on the road with THE band at the Wabash BBQ in Excelsior Springs, Missouri.
What a great time--award winning Q and a great open air Blues Garden full of folks of all ages waiting to get bluesified. And that they did
As my associate would illustrialously say, WOW. This band is on fire.
It was a beautiful afternoon when we arrived at the venue with temps in the upper 70s, mixed clouds and a light breeze gently blowing. The air was filled with the smell of sensational BBQ cooking in the smokehouse. The Garden was full of people celebrating one of the 5 poker runs held there that day. This had all the makings of a Rockin' night to come.
We couldn't load in as a local band was currently on stage so we decided to check into the hotel just a short block away.
What a treat. The Elms is an old historical landmark that has been rehabbed and returned to its full glory as a 5 star hotel. It's best known as the location where Truman's picture was taken holding a newspaper announcing the misprint of his opponent winning the presidential election as well as a playground for the rich including various well known mobsters. And now they can say "Anthony Gomes stayed here." Thanks to Mitch and Sherri for the great digs.
After a pleasant 2 hour break we headed back to load in and jump all over some great Q. At sound check Anthony and the fellas gave the growing crowd a little sneak peak at what was to come. Back to the hotel to freshen up and get ready to rock.
When we arrived at venue for show time, we found a crowd of over 300 including lots of family members. The KC street team was well represented, the lovely Karla and Larry front row center (thanks for helping Lo out of the elevator again), Anthony's new fans from the Government Mule show in St . Louis, our new friend Ben serving those great ribs and Heather, our bartending angel at the after party, and last but not least, the late arriving Reverend Will, always a welcome sight. We also had the pleasure of welcoming Laurie to the family.
And then it was show time and what a show it was. The smell of smoking BBQ in the air was replaced by the smell of smoking guitars and drums. And the stage exploded with sound and light, (thanks to Steve and crew for making it right). It's hard to put into words the power that this trio brings to the people. Theo and Fred help Anthony do what he does best--spank that bad ass guitar and do it his way. That 20 minute version of Darkest Before the Dawn rocked the house. The merch booth was busy all night with loads of new fans starting their Anthony Gomes music collection.
It was on to the after party which was held in the restaurant bar, presided by the lovely Heather. Thanks to Mitch and Sherri once again for the most awesome hospitality. They are big fans and go out of their way to make the band comfortable. Looks like we are coming back again next year. Mark this one as a must do road trip.
I am going to turn this report over to Lo for his input as it is my turn to take over the wheel. It's great to be back out with the best damsch band out there anywhere.
Right on Larry, pretty much telling it like it is, and I agree! And I must thank Dirk, for his help and unique way to remember his name...a simulated dirking to the ribs! Worked on me! Super Fan Stan bringing his cousin Gary and a dozen more deserving friends and family! Bring 'em on! PS-When we come back next year, please remind me that I know you!
When we say welcome to the future of the blues we mean it! About 10 kids ages seven through 10 were all over the dance floor, and hung out with the boys talking music during the break. Now that's what I'm talking about!!! And a shout out to my 'Retired Auto Workers' brother Bob! We be doing what we want, when we want, how we want! Yee Haa! And we figured that I couldn't remember his name these 6 years due to my slight dyslexia!?
As Larry said, the after party at the Wabash rocked! Which set the stage for Larry to be the last man standing...again! (Without falling this time!) The Elms is ground central for weddings from all over! As we (Anthony, Fred, Theo, Larry, Reverend Will) were winding down from the evening's scorching at the Wabash we met Cindy, the mother of the bride that afternoon, who was also winding down from a successful release of a loved offspring! And let me say this about that! Lovely Cindy from Lincoln Nebraska, was properly welcomed into the Family by Anthony's whit and charm, without his guitar! Hanging with these guys is just awesome! Makes the road and 18 hr. days, without my normal 3 naps, seem like play!
And a special thanks to Donna for stepping it up to be my road mamma when Nashville Kathy is not there for me! Thanks!
It looks like the next playground will be Canton and The Land Of Cleve! Ohio, HERE WE COME!!!
Your Conductors of Rock N Roll,
