Greetings to all from the Greater Kansas Blues Festival!
L3 here on the road with AG and the Boyz at Topeka for a Rockin 4th of July celebration with plenty of fireworks both onstage and off. Got my cooler stocked, green bag of munchies and my sun screen. The Spirit of Kansas - wsdhat a great festival. It's held every year on the 4th at Lake Shawnee just outside Topeka. It's a free festival and they allow coolers and you can bring your own fireworks to accompany the professional show put on after the music ends. Needless to say the park was full with thousands of folks enjoying a beautiful 83 degree afternoon and cool evening. (I think all of Topeka was there as a 15 minute trip to the venue from the hotel turned into an hour trip on the return and that was after we let the park clear out).
As I mentioned it was a beautiful afternoon and the crowd was being entertained by some good local and regional acts. Several groups of people were spread around the lake shooting off some fireworks they brought for the festivities. Occasionally some dancers would come to the front of the stage and do their thing. Then the FIREWORKS ONSTAGE erupted, as Anthony, Theo and Fred brought their own brand of technicolor explosives to the party. And I'm not exaggerating. Anthony opened the show with a rousing rendition of the Star Spangled Banner followed by my favorite party starter, Testify. Talk about getting the crowd on their feet. And it continued that way all through their performance as they wowed the crowd with Blueschild, One Last Time, Voodoo Child and many more. There was a constant flow of people at the merch booth that continued on well after the Bands set was over. Lots of old fans picking up the new shirts and even more new fans starting their Anthony Gomes music collection including several people buying multiple CDs. The BUZZ is on. This is the hottest band out there folks.
It was great to see some family I haven't seen for a while. Our KC street team was represented as well as our Topeka regular Big Bruce ( who didn't have to supply his famous BBQ dinner as we were fed well by the promotional staff). Steve Conn welcomed us as we arrived and then vanished. What happened to you my brother? It was wonderful to see Janet, one of our KC Street Teamers, back in action after she had been sidelined with back surgery. Superfan Heather Berry was absent due to a fender bender. The good news is that she's doing fine and we hope to see her at the next show!
Hamilton Loomis finished the show and there was time for a 3 song jam which included several artists from the festival participating. Then it was time for the professional pyrotechnics to begin and what a great finish to a great day at the lake . Actually the fireworks continued as many of the festival folks were firing off their own fireworks which they were allowed to do till midnight.
We returned to the hotel and were invited to an intimate afterparty by Matt Marshall, editor of American Blues Scene magazine. What a great time discussing the world of blues and music of all kinds till the wee hours of the morning. Just makes being on the road a little more special
! We are big fans of American Blues Scene magazine and encourage you to support them. Check em out at www.americanbluesscene.com
Thanks to Suki of Uncle Bo's fame for putting on a great festival and taking great care of the band. Great job and looking forward to Aug. 1st at Uncle Bo's (August 1st, August 1st, August 1st, August 1st). Great opportunity for those of you that need a road trip. This is a great venue located right in the Ramada in downtown Topeka. No driving back to the hotel. Yeah, yeah, yeah!
My advice to all is get to a show and see one of the most exciting music acts on the circuit. See you down the road.
